Additional Factors Identified in Parkinson’s Disease

Recently diet and lifestyle factors have been identified as possible contributing factors to the development of Parkinson’s Disease.  For many years Parkinson’s Disease and Parkinsonian like disorders were considered to be primarily of hereditary origin, and we may have thought we were “destined” to follow in our family’s foot-steps.  However, like many other recent findings [...]

Baby Carrots – True and False Information

I often have clients asking me about “baby carrots”….
The concern with which they ask me about these “devil” vegetables prompted me to look into the claims that they are from (A) deformed, larger carrots, and (B) that they are marinated in chlorine – the known carcinogen – and that when they have been in the [...]

Food Coloring

For many years I have warned about the less than innocuous coloring in foods – even in “so-called” healthy foods:
Gatorade and fruit flavored yogurts
Think – irritability, hyperactivity, depression, anger….  Many are also considered carcinogens (possible cancer causing agents)
Many colors are allowed in the U.S., yet banned in most European nations and Canada.  Do they know
something [...]

April – Stress Awareness Month

This is taken from my submission to our local newspaper.
As ski season comes to an end many of you might be able to let out a sigh of relief, only to come back in a few weeks for a busy summer season.  “Stress Awareness?”, you might exclaim, “I could be the poster child for stress [...]

Radiation Frenzy – Misguided and Possibly Harmful

Over the past few days a plethora of opinions and advice have spread across the internet, chain emails and social media websites.  At best the information might be harmless, at worst inaccurate and potentially dangerous.
Much of the recent coverage has centered around high doses of potassium iodide (KI) to prevent uptake of radioactive iodine by [...]

Fibromyalgia linked to Thyroid Dysfunction

Did you know that many of the symptoms associated with thyroid dysfunction are often present in people diagnosed with “fibromyalgia” but often overlooked.
One of the common symptoms of thyroid dysfunction includes myofacial pain and tender trigger points.  Travell and Simmons – experts in the detection and treatment of muscle dysfunction noted many decades ago that [...]

Gluten at Your Favorite Sushi Restaurant

If I am like many of you who are trying to avoid gluten, either because you know you have a sensitivity, have Celiac Disease, have been tested for the gene, or have an autoimmune condition – gluten can be very difficult to avoid by pure “logic” or “assumption”.
A few weeks ago I found out that [...]

Migraines – Adjuct Therapy Options

Migraines affect approximately 1/5 of the population, but the majority (75%) are women.  It has been reported that 3-7% of children also experience regular migraines.
Migraines are most often described as “one-sided, severe, pulsating headache pain that lasts from four to 72 hours. Other symptoms that often occur during a [...]

Osteoporosis Drugs Increase Cancer Risk

This month in the British Medical Journal another study describes the increased risk of cancer associated with oral bisphosphonates – the osteoporosis medications such as Fosamax, Actonel, Reclast, Didronel and Boniva.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20813820
The study shows that risk for esophageal, stomach and colorectal cancer increases with the use of bisphosphonates.
WebMD also published news of the study at the [...]

Alzheimer’s Prevention – Balance Your Blood Sugar

TIME magazine has a tiny paragraph on a new “enzyme” drug that might help Alzheimer’s patients whose body is not removing the characteristic Beta Amyloid plaque in the brain. The LA Times article below states that there “seems to be a link” between Diabetes and the development of these plaques. WELL OF COURSE THERE IS… [...]
